2017 Theme

Pentacle of the Great Turning

We are entering our third year of the theme Pentacle of the Great Turning. It was selected in summer of 2014 in order to ground our story selection for 3 years, Winter Witchcamps 2015, 2016, and 2017.

The Great Turning is a concept developed by author, activist and scholar Joanna Macy (http://www.joannamacy.net/) who says that, “The Great Turning is a name for the essential adventure of our time: the shift from the industrial growth society to a life-sustaining civilization.”

The Reclaiming tool of a pentacle is a physical and spiritual exercise to move and shape energy through the body. It is “used to enable people to experience various connected energies in a concentrated way” (from http://reclaiming.org/about/witchfaq/glossary.html Glossary of Terms), and is a tool of the north that lends stability.

In 2007, Free Cascadia Witchcamp combined the work of Joanna Macy and the Reclaiming tool of a pentacle into the Pentacle of the Great Turning. This happened through a community visioning process in order to honor, inspire and rebirth the great work of moving past our despair at all that must be done to heal the earth and stepping fully into the points of Desire, Surrender, Transformation, Solidarity and Manifestation.

While the Pentacle of the Great Turning is our camp theme for 2015, 2016, and 2017, the stories for 2016 and 2017 camps will be determined each year based on community engagement.

Riyana Rebecca Sang writes about the Pentacle of the Great Turning in Issue #100 of Reclaiming Quarterly, found here: reclaimingquarterly.org/100/RQ100-16-PentTurn.pdf
